When installing a Steam Shower, ensure that the shower will be enclosed and insulated, constructed of tile, marble or non-porous materials, and equipped with a water-tight shower door and floor drain. The ideal Steam Shower has a maximum ceiling height of eight feet. If you plan a taller space, you may need a higher-rated steam generator. The Steam Shower Seating should be slightly sloped and built-in for bather comfort. Fold up seats should be used to maximize shower space. Anti-skid strips should be added on the steam room to lower and prevent chances of slipping.

More tips

Always consider where you will install the Steam Shower generator. Steam generators may be installed in a closet, vanity, or heated attic or basement, up to 60 feet away from the steam room. The steam head should be located approximately 6-12 inches above the floor on a wall opposite the seating area, away from the entrance/exit area. Look for steam heads that remain cool to the touch. The optimal location of the in-shower control is inside the steam room 4-5 feet above the floor convenient to the bather and away from direct steam flow. Plumbing connections include a water line to the generator, a steam line from the generator to the steam room and a drain line. No heating, venting or air conditioning devices should be installed inside the steam room.

Waterproofing

The waterproofing element of a Steam Shower is mandatory, but the exact type depends on your finish material. For example, tile and natural stone showers require a layer of plastic sheeting over the studs on the walls and ceiling. That is followed by concrete board. A latex or membrane waterproofing layer is applied to the top of the board before the tile is installed. Slab material also uses the same type of underlayment board and waterproofing as tile, such as granite or cultured marble slabs. If you opt for sheet metal as a finish material, it installs directly over the same type of concrete board. The sheets are melded together for a seamless install. Some man-made panels install directly onto the wall studs with adhesive. Silicone caulk is used at the corners to make the installation seamless and waterproof. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when installing your finish material

The exact manufacturer specifications for your type of steam generators vary, but they require their own dedicated circuit breaker separate from the lights. This requires running wire from the breaker box of the home to the steam generators. Although you can run the wire yourself and connect it to the breaker box and generator, the wiring must be inspected by a licensed electrician before you cover the walls. Alternatively, some plumbers have the required licensing for wiring small shower-and-bath appliances.

All finish materials need to be caulked and, if applicable, sealed. There are few limitations on finish material, so long as there is a layer of waterproofing in place and the generators are pumping steam. You can use sheet metals, acrylic panels, tile and stone or slab material if you want a typical shower.
